How candidates prepare for the Final FFICM
Since June 2022 the FFICM written paper has been all single best answer: roughly 80 short SBAs worth one mark and 50 longer, scenario-based SBAs worth two marks, over three hours. PRIMEX questions use the same five-option single best answer format across the syllabus. Every option carries a grounded explanation, so you learn why the distractors are wrong, not only which answer is right. You must pass the MCQ before you can apply for the OSCE and SOE, so the written paper is where preparation starts.

The FFICM SOE is four fourteen-minute stations with two questions each, marked by two examiners, focused on clinical problems across the curriculum. The PRIMEX simulator runs structured stations in that shape: a clinical scenario opening, prioritised management probing, and integration across organ systems. It expects consultant-level UK answers with specific drug doses and targets, and follows up on vague answers the way a real examiner would. Voice mode lets you practise speaking the answer rather than typing it.

Final FFICM format: MCQ, OSCE and SOE
The Final FFICM is the exit examination of the UK Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine, taken during Stage 2 of training. It has three components. The written paper is a single best answer MCQ, delivered online, that you must pass before applying for the clinical exam. The clinical exam is a 13-station OSCE plus a four-station Structured Oral, taken together. PRIMEX is built by Dr Jay Marshall, who trained in anaesthesia and intensive care.
PRIMEX currently covers the written paper and the Structured Oral, with study notes and flashcards across the full syllabus. A dedicated OSCE station bank is on the roadmap.
