The Australian Medical Council (AMC) Examinations

The AMC Examinations are the pathway for international medical graduates (IMGs) seeking medical registration in Australia. The Part 1 AMC MCQ Examination is a computer-adaptive test (CAT) of 150 scored items covering the six AMC blueprint patient groups. The Part 2 AMC Clinical Examination is an OSCE held at the Melbourne AMC test centre.

The OSCE consists of 16 active stations (plus 4 rest stations), each 10 minutes (2 minutes reading time + 8 minutes task). The standard assessed is intern-level competency; the ability to function safely as a first-year Australian intern. All clinical content, drug names, guidelines, and systems must be Australian. The exam explicitly tests cultural safety and Indigenous Australian health.

Common questions
The AMC Part 1 is a computer-adaptive MCQ test (150 scored items) testing theoretical knowledge across the six blueprint patient groups. Part 2 is a clinical OSCE (16 active stations, 10 minutes each, Melbourne test centre) testing practical clinical competency at intern level. Part 1 must be passed before Part 2 can be sat. Primex covers both: MCQ CAT practice with Australian-specific explanations and an OSCE simulator covering all five station types.
The AMC Part 2 OSCE assesses whether a candidate can function safely as a first-year Australian intern across all clinical settings (GP surgery, emergency department, inpatient ward, community health). This means correct clinical decisions, Australian drug names and dosing (PBS/eTG), appropriate referral pathways (Medicare, NDIS, ACAT), and the communication skills to work with patients, families, and colleagues in an Australian context.
AMC examiners specifically penalise non-Australian clinical practice. This includes: using US/UK drug names (acetaminophen instead of paracetamol, epinephrine instead of adrenaline), citing non-Australian guidelines, describing non-Australian systems (referring to "the NHS" or "Medicaid"), and not knowing Australian-specific obligations such as mandatory child protection reporting, Austroads fitness-to-drive regulations, and notifiable disease reporting requirements. All Primex AMC content is explicitly Australian.
Communication stations (history-taking, explanation/counselling, ethics) are assessed on both clinical content and communication quality. Examiners look for: introducing yourself by name and role, establishing rapport before clinical content, using plain language (not medical jargon), checking the patient's understanding, addressing the patient's ideas, concerns, and expectations (ICE), and culturally safe communication. Simply delivering correct clinical information without these communication elements will not achieve a pass.
Yes. Primex AMC study notes and OSCE simulator explicitly address Indigenous Australian health (AMC_KU_11): Close the Gap health disparities, the Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) framework, the 715 health assessment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, cultural safety in consultation, interpreter services, and trauma-informed care. These topics appear in AMC OSCE communication stations and are a specific examiner focus.
Based on published AMC candidate feedback: (1) Communication stations; candidates fail to address patients directly, don't check understanding, or deliver information without establishing rapport; (2) Ethics stations; insufficient knowledge of Australian legislative obligations (Mental Health Act, mandatory reporting, Guardianship legislation); (3) Indigenous health stations; lack of cultural safety awareness and poor knowledge of SEWB framework; (4) Paediatric history stations; missing developmental milestones and not addressing parent concerns.
Primex also includes a Medical Students section specifically for Australian university clinical finals and OSCE preparation; with 573 topics across 30 specialties and OSCE practice at student level. The AMC and Medical Student sections overlap significantly in content (both test clinical medicine), but the AMC section is calibrated to intern-level competency and Australian-specific systems, while the Medical Student section is calibrated to final-year student assessment.
